The Morning Of A Typical ADD Child

There are many substances around us which can affect a person’s behavior and ability to focus and learn.  Some affects are believed to be transient and some are known to be permanent.

Obvious examples of substances include:

heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium
alcohol of all types
nicotine
caffeine
drugs – both legal and illegal
solvents and glues, such as airplane glue

and then there is petroleum.

Petroleum??

Who thinks about petroleum, except when we fill our gas tanks?    Few people are aware that thirty seven percent of the crude oil used in the United States goes into the manufacturing of other products with which we come in contact everyday.

Derivatives of petroleum and crude oil are in our clothing, cosmetics, shampoos, detergents, perfumes, paints, plastics, pesticides, and – most significant of all, our FOOD.

We eat, breathe, and surround ourselves with the by-products of crude oil every day.

Some of us have a hard time coping with these powerful substances.

Like our kids.

Let’s take a look at the typical morning of a young boy with ADD as he gets ready for school…

(Every substance which is likely to be an irritant for a chemically-sensitive person is noted with an *.)

He wakes up between sheets, which have been exposed to scented fabric softening strips*. He walks down the hall on new carpeting*, which still retains the smell of the chemicals used in it’s manufacture. An air freshener* adorns the bathroom and complete with scented soap* and scented tissue*. The tub has been cleaned with a miracle spray* and the scented chlorine* clings to the tile floor. His toothpaste is green*.

Breakfast is a bowl of sugar frosted grains* and synthetically colored marshmallow bits*.    All are treated with the preservative BHA* hidden within the added vitamin A.What looks like juice is a blend of water, sugar, and synthetic dyes*, plus artificial orange flavoring*.

An artificially colored, sweetened and flavored vitamin* tops off the meal.   If Jeremy is having one of his frequent ear infections, his mother adds a spoonful of bright pink bubble-gum flavored medicine*.  He grabs his homemade lunch that mom has prepared*** or puts his lunch money in hip pocket for the lovely flavorful meal served at his school******, runs past the fragrant potpourri*, out the door across the lush green lawn – treated with powerful pesticides* – across the newly paved asphalt* street.

He has forgotten his homework (for the third time this week) gets agitated easily, has trouble focusing all the time and Jeremy’s mother wonders why her son simply can’t get his act together.

How do you celebrate Earth Day?
If you’re not cleaning green – what’s stopping you?

Five Simple Shifts To Green

If the message has not filtered through to you yet, we really can’t clean this planet up by ourselves.

We need a collective force.

Please alert those that you might know to all that we have to offer regarding cleaning green.

Share.

People are more receptive than they have ever been before.

I want to spread the word.

Lets get that clean green feeling together? Will you help me?

Healthy You, Healthy Home, Healthy Planet

Discovering green clean for me was like discovering a non-toxic gold mine!! I want others to be as excited as I was way back in 1993. The company I purchased my non-toxic, highly concentrated and biodegradable products from has these ideals:

Safe Clean

We believe home should be the safest place in the whole world.

Powerful Clean

We believe you shouldn’t have to sacrifice powerful convictions for powerful cleaners and vice versa.

Green Clean

We believe cleaning house shouldn’t involve dirtying the earth.

Smart Clean

We believe in saving you money, while we go about saving the earth.

Here are just FIVE small steps that can help make a difference for our planet:
ONE

Conventional Cleaning products can contain questionable chemicals in them. Why not choose a healthier alternative? Our products are sustainably sourced from natural sources, using activated enzymes and cleaning agents that biodegrade. Simply switching keeps toxins away from your family. Want a clean switch ? We can help.

It’s about getting the kit. The kit offers you an opportunity to go non-toxic all the way. Everything you need to wipe the toxic slate clean in your home and office is in the kit. With our 100% guarantee, you have nothing to lose, but a lot of dirt and a lot of toxins !!

TWO

Use the disherwasher. I didn’t know this statistic. The EPA says that an energy effecient dishwasher uses only 4 gallons of water per cycle compared to that of handwashing, as well as saves $40 in energy costs and 230 hours of washing time.

Our dishwasher concentrate was the very first phosphate free automatic detergents ever made. EVER made. Phosphates are a major source of water pollution

THREE

Stop using anti-bacterial soap. I never believed in that stuff myself, however I didn’t know that Triclosan, a very common ingredient in those types of products, ends up in our water source and is acutely and chronically toxic to aquatic life. Not to mention a host of other horrific concerns. Click the link – scary information.

If you create antibiotic resistant bacteria you actually weaken the use of currently useful antibiotics. Additionally you don’t get any additional illness protection from something anti-bacterial, when a good soap and water wash provides all the prevention you need.

A medical docter once shared – ALL soaps are antiviral and antibacterial. Soaps break the surface tension on the “bugs” and kills most of them. Specific antibacterial soaps are used mostly by the medical profession—they do contain chemicals that kill bacteria and bacteria can become resistant to these soaps. In my hospital we have four different scrub soaps. We are encouraged to rotate soaps each time we scrub to help prevent bacterial resistance.

Our remarkable plant sourced hand wash product is completely soap free, ph balanced, hypoallergenic and its surfactants are biodegradable. Not to mention anti-bacterial free.

FOUR

Bring your own bag.  I personally find this one a no brainer.

Thousands of years to decompose plastic ? Forget that.

Get a reusable bag that means something to you and spread the word about a company that walks it’s talk, if you have something to share don’t keep it a secret.

(you can’t beat the price of these either – 6 of them for like $9!)

FIVE

If your going to spend, choose to spend with a socially responsible company. Your consumer dollars are the power that foster more environmentally responsible actions and products.

Can you can name one other company that introduced a cleaning product before the word biodegradable hit the dictionary ?

Additionally our company was the very first in the entire world ever to obtain climate neutral certification and totally offset it’s greenhouse gas emmissions.

That commitment still stands.

It’s what we do.

Spring Allergies – The Natural Approach

Allergies: The Nutritional Approach.

Do you or anyone you know suffer from allergies? I want to help!

Marching into Spring, for many means marching straight into allergy season – specifically those sensitive to pollen. Our approach is prevention and to be prepared.  Winter has taken it’s toll on our immunity – it’s time now to get out the nutritional tool box and do a bit of rebuilding.

Consider working with your allergies naturally!  There are three approaches we recommend: Re-building the immune system, reducing inflammation, and creating a non-toxic environment. We are the leading nutritional company, with a 50 year history, based in science, research and creating products in “Harmony with Nature”. Experience a difference, and you will, or your money back.

Certain nutrients benefit the immune system. When the body is in crisis, it is important to “feed” the immune system at the cellular level.  Unfortunately we can’t do that any more with diet alone, supplementation is key. Our nutrients have been tested for absorption, and are bio-available. What that means is that they are absorbed into the blood stream.

We begin with a core nutritional supplement program, which may include Soy Proteinand a Multi-Vitamin, (also known as nutritional insurance, our multi vitamin fills in the gaps that are often missing in our diet.) We then add Vitamin C,Beta-Carotene, and Vitamin E…these are nutrients that specifically support the immune system. This begins the rebuilding process. Vitamin C is very healing. Beta-Carotene is essential for the strength of mucousal membranes, a.k.a. your “inner skin”. Vitamin E has an affinity for oxygen. All of these are nutrients work together to protect against free radicals. We even have a proprietary blend of nutrients that support the immune system all in one tablet, for those who want to reduce the number of pills they take. Our Beta-Carotene now includes 5 top Caratonoids- the next generation of Carotenes found in the pigment of brightly colored fruits and vegetables.

Naturopathic Physician Diane Petoskey says that allergies can be caused by an abnormal immune response or, surprisingly by poor digestion and a toxic lower intestine, secondary to an overgrowth of Candida yeasts and pathogenic bacteria: she highly recommends friendly bacteria – to prevent antibiotic problems, and to enhance and improve immune function. Our friendly bacteria product is the only one that guarantees live delivery of Bifidus and Acidophilus.

Secondly, those with allergies often experience inflammation. The “itis” of sinusitis, bronchitis and so on means inflammation of the sinus’s or bronchia. The medical and drug approach to reducing inflammation is known for it’s many side affects. We have found that certain nutrients reduce inflammation naturally. GLA is an essential fatty acid found in plant seed oils, such as evening primrose oil or borage seed. GLA has been found to control acute and chronic inflammation. Our GLA comes from borage seed oil which is 3 times more concentrated than that from evening primrose oil. EPA is another natural anti-inflammatory sourced from fish oil. Vitamin C also reduces inflammation. Magnesium, something American’s are 80% deficient in, is especially effective at relaxing bronchia tissue and it also has been demonstrated to reduce the histamine response.

There are also herbs that benefit those who have allergies. It is important here to note the purity, potency and the quality control of our medicinal herbs. Unfortunately, in the industry there is no federal regulation, recent studies have shared that there is often misrepresentation in the labeling in “health food store products” especially with herbs. All of our products go through a complex and stringent raw materials check, are manufactured at pharmaceutical grade and they are tested once again after they are manufactured for bioavailabilty. This remarkable rigor is unheard of in the industry.

A few recommended herbs include: Alfalfa as a natural decongestant. Echinacea a native american herb as an immune system booster, Garlic has a profound history and is naturally anti-bacterial, fungal, viral and reduces inflammation too. Gingko-biloba assists circulation.  Seemingly those with allergy related asthma find great benefit from this medicinal herb.

The third area we have had dramatic results with is cleaning up your personal environment.  A person with allergies may be even more sensitive to toxins than others. There is no reason to use laundry or household products that could aggravate your condition. We have a complete line of environmentally safe, phosphate free cleaning and laundry products.

Remember that your body is 70% water…consider water as another vital nutrient…by purifying your water you contribute greatly to your health and well being.

Mother Earth Says Wash Your Hands

I worked once with a group of seniors and was sharing with them how important  it was for them to drink water and stay hydrated.

One of the men said, ” wanna know why we don’t drink water?”  WHY?  ”cuz drinking water makes us pee!”  And going to the bathroom is a problem? Jokingly he said, “well, when you’ve been doing it for 80 years, it gets to be a bother!”

I had to laugh.

Yet the reality of his comments spoke to how issues of health and well being  for some can sometimes be a bother.

Take for instance the CDC recommending us to wash our hands more frequently to help stop the spread of the flu.

In recent days I have heard many folks complain about how they hate washing their hands more because the soap they are using is wreaking havoc with their skin!

Ever see some folks hands?  Raw, red, and chapped from the changing weather and too much hand and dish washing?

Well, not all soaps are created equal.

As a matter of fact my favorite recommendation is a NON-soap bar, that is positively delicious to use.  Very emollient and lightly fragrant with oatmeal, vitamin E, and wheat germ oil.  PH balanced ( non-stripping) and biodegradable.

I also recommend a liquid hand wash. I dilute this by 50% making it very economical. Or better yet I use a foamer.  Something that I can pump and not rinse.  Very quick . Natural botanical formula, also biodegradable surfactants, non-toxic and also PH balanced.

What’s with PH Balanced?

If a personal care product is too acidic or high in PH it’s strips the acid mantle.  Your acid mantle is what protects your skin, your largest body organ.

How about what you use to hand wash your dishes ? Is your product sourced from natural, sustainable plant sources? Mild on your hands, lightly fragrant, have long lasting suds and leave your dishes sparkling??

( this product is 32% more effective than Clorox Green and 92% more effective then the Seventh Generation brand)

This product was also awarded the 2008 PTPA Media Award

May your hands survive your preventative washing and squeaky clean dishes!!

P.S. I am not a fan of anything anti-bacterial. Triclosan, a very common ingrediant in those types of products, ends up in our water source and is acutely and chronically toxic to aquatic life. Not to mention a host of other horrific concerns. It’s beyond me that this is so widely recommended

Having Impact Via No Impact Man

This morning I sat in a very crowded university hall listening to the convocation comments of Colin Beavan aka No Impact Man. His role was to inspire and launch the new freshman into the new year, all of whom had read his book as part of the summer reading program.

My fantasy was to actually meet him, talk with him, be in his greenness and perhaps snap a photo – just us.

[ insert really great photo of no impact man and best of mother earth here ]

He was unfortunately scooped up and away as part of his responsibilities at the university.

Understandably so!

His fall speaking circuit is a follow up not only to IWU’s freshman, but to 30,000 kids who read his book this past summer!

Impressive stuff!!

Thankfully I did have access to his comments today and his classic, what I will affectionately call befuddledness, of which he pulls off really really well.

I am a no impact man fan. I admit this. If  you steep yourself in any of his work you will feel a loyalty to him. It isn’t hard to do.

He’s thoughtful, engaging, funny, inspirational and adorably befuddled!

To me befuddled  means he’s sort of brilliant and confused at the same time.

Why did this person come into my world?

In the beginning, he opened my eyes to those who were doing green like things

and using blogging as a platform to include others in the journey.

He was way out loud about his exploration, his frustrations and his discoveries. All brilliantly documented thanks to his blog.

Past that I was really taken how someone seemingly so humble could take on fame and often fame that was criticized and be so gracious about it all.  This is what has me continue to follow his journey.

I think he stated it best when he asked  how do we work, earn a living passionately and have impact on the world we live in?  At first his project was about learning to live without impact on the environment. However his year of living sustainably  and all the thoughts he had along the way truly will have a lasting impact in a world that wants and needs to change.

I can’t say in my youth that I had access to anyone who inspired my path. My life path that is. I was motivated by small minded things like boys and problems at home and escaping them.   My friend recently shared of his influences as a child.  I thought my goodness who the heck influenced me?  I can’t actually say.  I can say that motherhood fostered a strength of character in me I had no idea of.   AND I can honestly say that in that path of being a mom, I became a person who wanted to help. Help in the community, help others feel well, educate according to my particular sensibilities; cooking from scratch, eating local and organic, taking one’s vitamins and cleaning green!!

I took a course long ago that centered around circles of influence and having a lasting impact in those circles of influence. At the time I had no idea what my ability was to leave a lasting impression.  I had no idea who I was, let alone how powerful an impact I might have!!  Turns out I had more influence than I knew!

This morning Colin asked these freshman to wonder why are they on this planet?  He spoke of choices, of thinking less of oneself and of how life or even world emergencies need to be resolved together. A simple, but very powerful message. I admire his work with our youth, our future really. These are the minds that are taking care of what might be next for all of us!!

How nice it was to be with you, your thoughts and your message Colin!
