Holiday Stress Affects Health

This holiday time of year the pressure is on and stress is high.

Would you agree?

By design, our bodies are protecting us from danger. When we feel threatened, a series of chemical responses prompts the entire body to prepare for fight or flight.

Stress, however, triggers these stress response chemicals even when we’re unable to react physically. The result can be a host of physical disorders.

The adrenal glands are the chain of command when stress calls.  The adrenals release certain hormones that stimulate other body systems. Hormones released during stress include: adrenaline**, cortisol*, cortisone.

* = which hormone is released

Types of Stress

Acute Stress: This is the body’s reaction to alarm. You feel it when the boss calls you into the office, when you are involved in a heated argument, when a baby cries or when a siren zooms up behind you on the highway.

Chronic Vigilance Stress: This is what you feel when you cope with children all day, when you are constantly struggling to meet deadlines, when you are worrying about finances.

What type of stress do you have and what body systems are affected?

Body Systems That Are Affected:

Blood vessels*: Repeated or continuous high pressure can cause blood vessels to harden.

Digestive System*: Stress chemicals increase gastric acid to speed digestion and to access energy from food. Repeated surges of excess acids can lead to ulcers. Digestion can also be completely halted by stress.

Heart**:  The heart beats much faster during stress, sometimes even skipping a beat.

Blood Pressure**:  Stress raises blood pressure. Chronic high blood pressure can lead to damaged arteries, set up conditions for heart disease, heart attack or stroke.  Stress releases fats into the blood-stream for quick energy. Clotting agents are also released to protect the blood in the case of injury. These fats can build up in the blood vessels making them narrower, while clotting agents make the blood thicker, thereby increasing the risk for heart attack.

Lungs:  Breathing quickens to improve “fight or flight” response.

Muscles:  Chemical and nervous reactions to stress tense the muscles. Repeated tensing leads to muscle tension headaches, backaches and muscle soreness, as well as knots and cramps throughout the body.

Immune System: Stress is thought to lower immune function and increase the risk of immune –related conditions.

Hormones: Stress disrupts hormones that regulate menstrual cycles causing missed, shortened or lengthened periods.

There are nutritional supplement programs that can naturally assist with the above health issues.  Ask me for more information!

Here are some practical tips:

Slow, deep breathing will return heart rate to normal and improve circulation.
Take breaks
Walk away from stressful situations.
Find humor. Surround oneself with people who make you laugh and smile.
Stretching can do wonders.
Find ways to relax daily.
Be sure to spend plenty of time with those you care about.
The above are immediate de-stressers.

Chemicals triggered by stress are burned off by regular exercise. The muscles, heart, and blood vessels cope better with stress when one has exercised. Sleep is greatly improved when one exercises.

The above was sourced from a Chicago Tribune newspaper article written by the author of Is it Worth Dying for? By Dr Robert S Eliot (1993 )

Hormones are released by the adrenals. When these hormones are in balance they are really good for us

Adrenaline is the one we use all day…it helps us deal with traffic, public transportation, bad weather, deadlines, chaos and people!

Cortisone is the repair hormone… it’s healing properties are magic to the body.  People who get cortisone shots or use cortisone creams think this stuff  is a miracle, it’s just topically doing what the body can no longer do. When there isn’t enough cortisone we actually create degenerative inflammatory conditions (psoriasis, arthritis)

Cortisol is what wakes us up in the morning… we need equal amounts of cortisol for the amount of adrenaline used that day and this must be done while we sleep.

Cortisol is one we really want to watch.  When over produced during high stress… is like fire in the blood stream, causing silent inflammation all over the body, one can’t feel it or see it.

Brain – silent inflammation in the brain can hinder our ability to focus, cause loss of concentration, and even affect short term memory i.e., as dymensia

High levels of cortisol release the hormone progesterone.

Progesterone puts the “spare tire” around the middle. When your body can’t lose weight, specifically in the middle, it is telling us we are stressed.

High cortisol also destroys serotonin ( low serotonin levels contributes to sleep issues, memory loss and depression )

I carry a particular stress relief product that can help relax the body and mind and promote alertness while enhancing the body’s ability to adapt to stress.  This natural ingredient blend also blunts cortisol, a hormone when over produced can affects long term health.

Why I Gave Up Diet Coke By Amy Wilson

Amy is a lovely student I met in a Fitness Class I guest taught at ISU this summer.

She was curious about the topic of aspartame poisoning after we discussed the top ten food additives to avoid and why.   She decided to stop drinking diet pop.

I am really glad she did.

Thank you Amy for sharing your story!

Why I Gave Up Diet Coke?

By: Amy Wilson

Since Coca-Cola first hit the market in 1886, it has been one of America’s favorite beverages.  What is it about Coca-Cola that makes it so irresistible?  As a heavy diet coke drinker, I myself could not seem to put it down.  One day, I looked at the ingredients on a can of diet coke and was astounded by my findings; I had no idea what some of the ingredients were.  Diet coke contains: carbonated water, caramel color, aspartame (an artificial sweetener), phosphoric acid (used primarily in the manufacture of fertilizers, detergents, and pharmaceuticals), potassium benzoate (a chemical preservative), natural flavors, citric acid (a natural preservative, benign cleaning agent, and acts as an antioxidant), and more caffeine (a stimulant) than both coke zero and classic coke.  Concerned about the toxins I was taking into my body, I decided to give up diet coke for two weeks and see how I felt.  In the meantime, I planned to research and figure out what all the mysterious ingredients were.  On day one of my two week trial, I sat down and figured out how much diet coke I was actually drinking; the numbers were startling.  On average I drank 60-90 ounces of diet coke daily.  As my consumption of diet coke had become a consistent part of my day, so did headaches, bloating and gas, digestive problems, and fatigue.  To counter-balance the fatigue, I drank more diet coke and even some coffee.  On day one I was feeling pretty good, but I could tell fatigue was setting in.  By day three and day four, I was in bad shape.  I had extreme fatigue, headaches, and agitation; I was going through caffeine withdrawal.  After day seven, all my side effects had subsided and my health related problems significantly reduced.  It has been two months now since I chose to give up diet coke and I’m feeling better than ever; I’m able to focus without the use of any caffeine.  I don’t think that give up soda cold turkey is the best suggestion for everyone, but cutting back can’t hurt.  Maybe it’s time you evaluate your own soda consumption and see how it may be affecting your health.

* don’t know about you, but when i see natural beauty like the above image and realize that this gift of beauty is also a natural gift that heals – i totally get goosebumps

Detoxify

Why detox?? Well, there are a million reasons to cleanse major areas of the body, and millions of approaches one can take. You can focus on one area in particular, or approach the project as a whole. Detoxification for some can be unpleasant, but my philosophy is if getting toxins out of the body is a little icky ( how’s that word for a scientific explanation ), better to get it out of my body now than have it wreak havoc in my body later.

Several medicinal herb products; Natural LaxativeMilk Thistle, Friendly Bacteria andAlfalfa which are highlighted briefly below, contribute to a comprehensive detoxification program. Taken for 30 days, one will notice more energy, a clearer state of mind, regular and complete bowels and a stronger resistance to virus’s, flu or the common cold. Other products like Garlic, Fiber and Digestive Enzymes are also great to add to the program. I also included a product that relieves stress or state of mind detoxing and to blunt the over production of cortisol.

I drank a ton of water!! Water and Fiber are the two vehicles used to flush toxins from the body.

The colon is the most significant organ in our body, it is said that all health begins in the colon and I agree with that statement. Dr. William Donald Kelley a nationally known nutritional consultant says, 80% of people who take vitamins do not absorb them due to build up of waste material in the colon. It’s fair to say this statement applies to absorbing nutrients from the foods we eat as well. The natural healing profession has long known that well over 90% of degenerative disease conditions can be directly related to intestinal stasis, that is, a stagnant, fermenting condition within the bowels and related organs. This condition does not necessarily correspond to actual known constipation as one might think. A person can move their bowel many times a day, but not move the horrific debris that gathers. Over time this accumulation can contribute to a re-circulation of toxins throughout the entire body
( ewwwwwwww! ) and give rise to an endless chain of disease conditions.

The founder of our Company created in 1917 (!!) an extremely impressive product based on how strongly he felt about the relationship of the colon to overall health. Herbal medicines have a fabulous and impressive history and in my opinion play a significant role in a solid health plan. Some herbs can be used daily. Others occasionally. While others are used for specific conditions as alternatives to medications. Natural Laxative, one of our signature products utilizes the herb senna and is safe to use daily. This product can not be compared to artificial television colon cleansers which often evoke an emergency response, are irritating to the tissues, sometimes even damaging. Good high quality products will strengthen, normalize, cleanse and detoxify the colon.

Note: Not all medicinal herbal products are created equal. Make sure to purchase from a company you can trust.

The Liver is an equally important organ that often gets overlooked. The liver is a filter for every single toxin that comes into our body and the toxins stay there. We change the filters of our cars, our furnaces and even our tap water, but how can we clean the liver?? Someone once described it to me like this; imagine never ever wiping the windshield off on your car ever, and imagine how grimey that windshield would get. How would that effect how we see out of our car? How can a major organ keep our body clean if the filter is not cleaned once in a while? Milk Thistle is an amazing medicinal herb that can actually regenerate the cells in the liver. I am continually amazed at the wisdom of our human body, and when given the right tools how it can do remarkable things.

Acidophilous Bifidus, huh? That’s a techy way of saying friendly bacteria!! Many know about this live culture which is often found in yogurt. Would you believe that by the time we reach adulthood that the balance of the friendly bacteria in our colon is greatly reduced or even depleted?

Why restore this important bacteria?

Better digestion, enhanced immune function and a stronger resistance to parasites and other microbial bad guys are just a few reasons! Our friendly bacteria was product perfection in the making, it took them eight years to get it just right, but the teeny tiny pearl was worth the wait and more. Ours is the only product that can guarantee delivery of friendly bacteria to the colon. 500 million of the good guys each and every time!! Others on the market can not make that claim.

Another important herb in a detox program is Alfalfa. Alfalfa’s deep deep root system pulls in a zillion nutrients and minerals from the soil. It’s leaves are chlorophyll rich, which is very, very cleansing.

Throughout the next week I will share a bit more in depth about how the above nutrients and herbs  can be used as detoxification tools.

With Good Health You Have It All.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said ” The First Wealth Is Health “

Would you agree??

The commentary below is from an insert that I have often tucked into my christmas greetings. It is especially meaningful to me in that it reinforces the work I do.

written by Sarah Breathnach Ban from 1995′s Simple Abundance

“Money has to buy alot during this time of year, but can it buy gifts that count the most?  Can it buy love, a good marriage, vibrant independant children, creative expressiveness, inner peace and most of all can it buy health?”

Having brought back layers of my health these two years I really appreciate the strident, true and methodical steps one must take to find strength to get through yet another day

If I had to choose between the material things in life or the health achievements of recent years I’d choose my health in a heartbeat.

“We can’t buy good health, no matter how much money we have. We can buy profound medical treatments but actual good health is not for sale.  Your health is a priceless gift and it’s only when we become sick do we get reminded how priceless it really is”

“If you have your health you have more wealth than all the riches in the world. A healthy mind, heart, reserves of stamina and an abundance of vreative energy to draw on, will have the world literally lying at your feet – with good health you have it all.”

“What is health? Is it the absence of sickness? Good health is vitality, vigor, high energy, emotional equilibrium, mental clarity and physical endurance. This is the health to pray for”

She says, take your vitamins she furthers says,  ”that if there is only one lesson I can inscribe into your consciousness… ask for good health and get real specific “

Ask and get specific — LOVE that!

Ask yourself how committed are you to your health and well being?

How I can be of a support to you and an advocate for your well being.

Those who take supplements really do have better health!
