Welcome Scott And Dale

A young man named Scott and dog, drove in from St Louis this past Saturday and are relocating to my former apartment.

Scott’s sweetheart, Dale is recovering from emergency back surgery and will follow as soon as she is able.

My Harris apartment was a sanctuary for me these last three years. The apartment was on the second floor of a Victorian home. It was quirky, old, crooked and filled with incredible light and love. It was a space that hugged. I don’t know how else to describe the energy of the home. When I moved in I needed all the hugs I could get!

Once the purchase of my home was a given my landlord asked if I’d mind showing the place. Since I loved it,  it was my pleasure to share my affection for the area and the apartment.

I had the opportunity to show the apartment to Scott and Dale – a delightfully sassy young couple. Something about these two just makes you fall in immediate like with  them. I spent 90 minutes sharing every nook and cranny of the apartment. It was ever so clear that they loved it and wanted it. From the ooohs and ahhhs at every turn, to the endless questions and especially when Dale absolutely squealled when she saw the inside of a closet painted purple!!  ( is it still purple?)

When Scott showed me this painting (see below) on his iphone — I couldn’t stop thinking about it . I loved it! He captured them as a couple ever so beautifully. When they left we promised to keep in touch via facebook and twitter. Imagine finding new friends in this process.

I found out  several days later through facebook that they were approved for the apartment.  I can’t begin to tell you how happy I was for them.

Since, Scott gave me permission to share his painting.

Isn’t it wonderful!!?

Wishing you both a very VERY happy home .  Dale — I totally have you in my thoughts during your recovery!

Warmly,

Karen

My NEW Green Mattress

One of my freelance writing clients handcrafts mattresses. It’s really very cool how he distinquishes himself in the marketplace.  Each mattress is made individually to order.

I affectionately call Tim – the owner of Quality Sleep Shop, Mr. Bedhead, as he carries that tossled just woke up look about him very well.

Recently he added natural latex mattresses to his line of products.

I went with Tim and his family to the Green Festival in Chicago.  We shot some video for promotion purposes. During the video I asked him how can one manage a latex allergy.

Mr. Bedhead had me trial a piece of Talalay processed latex  for three nights wrapped on my wrist.  Good news – absolutely No reaction!!

I asked Tim if  he’d be open to bartering my writing  for a new organic latex mattress

He agreed!!  ( Can you imagine how pleased I was that he said yes!)

The very last item loaded ( more like squished!) onto my moving truck was this new organic handcrafted masterpiece.

I can’t tell you how deliciously rested I’ve been. The mattress one sleeps on really does make a difference!

The traditional mattress I was sleeping on before — I bought in 1995 – had totally seen better days.

What a great way to start off in my new home! Thank You Mr. Bedhead!!

Esophageal Cancer Up 600 Percent!

WebMD Medical NewsReviewed by Louise Chang, MDNov. 10, 2005A dramatic rise in one of the deadliest types of cancers may be linked to the increasing rates of acid reflux and gastrointestinal disorders, according to a new report.

But researchers say a better understanding of how this type of esophageal cancer develops is needed before effective prevention and treatment strategies can be developed.

The report shows cancers of the esophagus and stomach are among the deadliest of all cancers with more than 80% of those affected dying within five years.

Although cancers of the stomach (gastric cancer) have been steadily declining over the last 50 years, studies show the incidence of a cancer affecting the esophagus (esophageal adenocarcinoma) has risen by about 600% over the past few decades.

Risk Factors for Esophageal Cancer

In the report, published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, researchers reviewed studies on cancers located where the stomach ends and esophagus begins, referred to as the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ).

The major risk factors for this type of cancer are gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its associated conditions, such as Barrett’s esophagus. In Barrett’s esophagus, precancerous changes are present. Other associated risk factors include alcohol and tobacco use, obesity, and eating a diet low in fruits and vegetables.

Studies have shown that the part of the esophagus closest to the stomach is more exposed to concentrated gastric acid and a variety of agents that may contribute to the increased risk of cancer in this region.

Despite advances in screening methods for this type of cancer, researchers say more research is needed to find new ways to prevent the disease and detect it early.

The researchers say that a limited ability to detect cancerous tumors early in this region has made it difficult for researchers to understand how to develop and create effective esophageal cancer prevention strategies.

I have successfully worked with a variety of very challenging digestive disorders utilizing a non-medical approach.

By adding nutrients to restore the health of the colon, reduce inflammation naturally, altering an acidic digestive system and making significant lifestyle changes we have reversed these conditions.

In the case of GERD and/or Acid Reflux our work has been one hundred 100% successful. It’s astounding to think that the rise of this very common concern has risen 600% !!  No wonder antacid ads are part of everyday commercialism.

Here is a potential list of high quality nutritional products that can offer relief and rebuilding and perhaps even a natural prevention strategy for esophageal cancer.

Chewable Calcium – a natural antacid without the high sodium, food dyes or artificial sweeteners
Friendly Bacteria – all health begins in the colon – by creating a strong intestinal fluora you absorb nutrients more effectively from your diet. A healthy colon also increases immune function
Digestive Enzymes - when the stomach begins to falter sometimes the enzymes needed for digestion are hindered – this supplement gives you specific enzymes needed to process certain foods
Calcium Magnesium - acid reflux has muscle spasmatic symptoms - calcium and magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant
Essential Fatty Acids - offer natural reduction of inflammation
Alfalfa – can alter the stomach PH making it less acidic
Peppermint and Ginger - a tea that can be soothing

A word about the medications perscribed for these conditions. I have been told about additional problems or harm, especially to the liver,  that come from the medications taken for acid reflux and gerd.

If you are choosing to medicate you can at least protect, detoxify and rebuild the cell damage caused to the liver by taking this product that has the herb Milk Thistle in it.

Finally, if a client does not transition to  fruits and vegetables well,  taking them in supplement form can begin the healing and rebuilding process.

Above is an example of a comprehensive nutritional protocol for a person who is dissatisfied with a medical approach.  Each client is different and unique – programs and results can vary.

Fiber For Digestive Health

Fiber isn’t particularly fun to talk about. Yet when you don’t have enough fiber in the diet that’s not fun either.

A nutritionist once told me that in order to get enough daily fiber in our diet we needed to eat:

13 cups brown rice ( brown rice is 7 times more fibrous than white )
an entire lb of carrots – that’s a bag folks
and 7 apples

a day.

Try and imagine ALL of that food sitting on your plate waiting for you to eat it – each and every day.

The FDA suggest 25 Grams a day

We just don’t do it.

Remember the conversation about the good, the bad and the ugly re: digestion ?

Fiber is the transit for the ugly. The ugly binds ( no pun intended ) to the fiber we eat and gets it the heck out of our body where it doesn’t belong.

Best way to get the fiber we need in our body is to eat it. Whole grain breads, pastas, veggies and fruit.

The second best way is to supplement it. Tuck it in as we say. Be sure that it’s something you get “regular” about.

I have fiber tablets ( sourced from beets, soy, lemon and grapefruit), this includes both a soluble and insoluble fiber.

I also carry a very special fiber that cholesterol binds to making it an absolutely excellant addition to a natural cholesterol lowering program.

Are you getting enough fiber in your diet?

Moving

On one day I closed on my new house.

The very next day the largest rental truck one could get was loaded. I hired loaders. We did all the packing ourselves.  I’ll be damned if we didn’t fill that entire HUGE truck, plus a spare pick up and two cars.

The following day we all caravaned two hours south west to my NEW house. I hired unloaders.

They were a husband wife moving team who brought their three kids and a dog.  A “family” business.

My friend said – this worries me.

It got done. Slowly.  A bit ineptly. But it all got done.

That was ALL one week ago.

I wish I could say the event went without a hitch.  It didn’t. Lots of chaos and craziness.  Everything took longer than expected. Some things got scratched, nicked and damaged. Two glass items got broken.  Amazing actually when one considers that we are not professional packers.

Enough money went flying out of my checking account to have my bank call me and say hey there’s some unusual activity going on here.

No Kidding.

Friends stopped by, helped and hugged.  Gotta love that!

Today I am pleased to say I am down to about two dozen or so boxes left to unpack.

Each day, one stack of boxes at a time, one room or area at a time.

Holy Smokes.

I marvel at how much stuff there is.

Seriously where does it all come from?

I additionally marvel at  how many decisions must be made.

I am really, REALLY sick of making decisions.

I think that  must be the single hardest part of moving. Which box should this go in, what should I give away, where the heck should this go?? When is garbage day? Where do we go grocery shopping?

I will say this.   I love it here.  I can’t believe how much I love it.  I am of course thrilled by that.

I also have to say that if you knew the adjusted gross income on my  last years tax return you’d say – how the heck did this girl buy a house?

I just did.
