Art Quilts by Karen Carter

My friend and quilt artist Karen Carter has a solo exhibition show beginning today at the Virginia Beach Central Library Gallery. Karen’s quilt work is impressive. She uses color playfully, has an uncanny ability to meld fabric patterns, her quilting style is wonderfully unique. I find her works are from the heart. She’s the kind of person who warms a room with her grace and smile.  Her quilts give you that very same sense. I am so happy for her and her success.

I hired her several years ago to create a special something for my Kate.

I can hardly begin to explain how she captured my daughter through this piece. It’s truly rather magical

Note the fuzzy yarn, the charms, buttons, the beads all sewn in by hand and the sassy crazy stitching. Note the vibrant colors. Its totally Kate!

This was the note Kate wrote in appreciation.

“It was Christmas Eve morning, and I was holding my last gift of the day. My mom pulled out her camera, so I knew she especially saved this one for last, and it would be my favorite gift. I read the card suspiciously, which was the note describing me, that she sent to you earlier. As I tore off the wrapping paper, I saw the colorful green and blue plaid, under the plastic bag. I took it out and saw ” Kate’s Christmas 2002 Love, Mom ” embroidered on the quilted cloth. I opened up to the first section, and was completely blown away. The intricate patterns on the cloth, and colorful beads astounded me. As I opened the rest of the quilt I was speechless. So much work went into it, and my first thought was “Mom you couldn’t have made this. Or did she?”. When I looked up, I saw my mom crying, she was so happy. I was on the verge of tears myself. As I continued to look at it I saw the amazing colors, and unique stitching and little charms. I had never seen anything like that before. It is something I will keep forever and ever. It is hanging in my room in a very special place. You are very talented, and I hope you never stop stitching! Thank you, thank you, thank you!”   Sincerely, Kate

She liked it!!

  1. Hi, there!thanks – you are too much- made my day! My sister and my folks are in town for the reception tomorrow and we all loved reading your entry and Kate’s sweet letter once again. I truly appreciate your encouragement and support and wish you were here to celebrate in person. I’m pleased with the number of pieces they were able to hang at the gallery (15!) and the initial response has been very positive. Can’t help but attribute all of this to the time we spent together in our little band of brave artists! loving your blog-you’ve found your voice and its touching others in ways you can only imagine-keep it up!Karen
