Green Renaissance

Patricia Martin, speaker, consultant and author is my neighbor, my friend and fellow member of West Suburban Woman Entrepreneurs.

Pat makes me laugh.  I laugh with every part of me when I am with her. She’s brilliant, thoughty and stylish. I admire her inquisitive nature and even more her compassionate spirit. I love that when she asks you what is it that you do. She really wants to know.

She recently released a book called:  Renaissance Generation – the rise of the cultural consumer and what it means to your business.

Her book speaks to my cultural consumer sensibilities. I don’t even know where to begin to comment about it. She describes a fall. Before a renaissance can actually occur it’s got to get bad – really bad.

( I’d say were heading towards pretty bad – wouldn’t you? ).

She then describes through a variety of mediums like the internet, education, museums and our youth an amazing future. A hope, a something beautiful beyond who and what we are living today. It was intoxicating to read about. I found the book very redefining. I think I could fit the ren/gen profile big time

Yesterday on her blog Pat had a fascinating post speaking to the premise of WalMart and retail playing green.

I completely marvel at how far we all have come in the green movement. One year ago being green was not even a common household term – now it’s not only common,  it’s completely trendy.

Trendy really means very little to me.

How practiced or really green are we?

I may have my own way that I contribute to green-ness.  Yet – there are others like No Impact Man or Franke James who live or do green in a way that makes my green efforts look ridiculous by comparison.

I think of Oprah as someone who spirals her own economy – she says it — it sells. Similar to Oprah, and suprisingly, Walmart has it’s own pull –it’s own very special economy.  I so deplore the store, it’s environment. Truly you’d have to pay me to shop there.  I can’t be part of some of their business practices.

Yet I have to say when Pat speaks to what the company is doing to change, I am intriqued.  Not only is the company making different decisions and acting on them, they are also collaborating with others.  I call that leadership. From a business perspective it’s called making money. It’s brilliant.

Patrica defined it as a grander purpose or open – source thinking.

I say it’s purpose with a cause.

Perhaps it’s cause marketing with a whole lot of makining money on the side.

Someone will make money being and doing green. WalMart?

I still probably won’t shop there. Ever.

P.S. Today ( friday ) I read a post on a green friend’s blog and just had to add this link right back at you sweetheart—

Note: the premise of this blog is totally and entirely recycled.  We are sooo cyber GREEN!!

  Me…wondering green

  1. Hi Karen,You flatter me. Our green lifestyle changes are totally in sync with how we want to live. For example we prefer to walk not drive, so we can be more fit. We prefer to have beautiful trees and plants to look at not an interlocking driveway — hence the green driveway. We’re lucky to have found ways to be green that are in line with our selfish desires and also help combat climate change.

  2. Karen-One of the marvels of the blogosphere is how useful it is for sharing ideas. Your blog flatters me, Karen. It also inspires me to think that we can all benefit from each others musings. I agree with you, Wal-Mart has a long way to go to lure me into the store. But they have made progress in dissuading RenGenners from out-and-out hating their brand. Thanks for the praise, and thanks for being such a thoughtful blogger.Pat
