The linen in me in this title refers to a very passionate affection I have for fine bedding. I was a “closet” linen affectionado for quite some time – the coming out of which was a revelation to behold!!
Many years ago I spent Monday mornings with a wonderful group of artisan woman – our mentor was a sculpturist, now collage artist ann kleboe- we had writers, quilt artist karen carter, some were multi-faceted, some like me were undefined.
I loved my monday mornings with these woman. It was a remarkable way to jump start a week and it was an unleashing stepping stone for many creative parts of me.
Together and for about 3 years we worked through the books by Julie Cameron – Artist Way
, Vein of Gold
and my very favorite The Right to Write
In the beginning we were prompted to write morning pages – a journal excersize – write 10 minutes each and every morning. It was at first stream of conscious writing – just write about what was there.
I had just divorced – had just landed that pathetic waitress job ( nothing against waitressing – please, my history is very proud of my waitron years) I was not in my head at a very good place. I had just launched my second child to kindergarden All I wanted to do was sleep. ( if you have ever sent your youngest child off to school and didn’t want to crawl back under the covers – just let me know)
And so as a good and eager little student I wrote in the darn journal, in the darn morning and for at least a darn good 10 minutes
for weeks
The next layer was to reread what you wrote and highlight any prevelant themes
hmmmmmmmm
my morning pages read a bit like this:
i want my pillow, my bed, my cocoon of quilted goodness, please don’t make me wake up, I am tired, I am tired I want my pillow, I want to go back to bed, please don’t make me write these morning pages
seriously
the worst part is I had NO Idea I was writing in this way
i was in the zone pleading with my pen and paper negotiating between the reality of journaling as I had promised vs just crawling back into bed
I also had a really big story about linen and loving it, but never getting to have the quality of linen I felt every fine woman should have — this goes back to my first marriage
actually allow me to clarify – i was exposed then to fine bed linen and had fine linen - I just didn’t get to pick the actual style of linen – like the pattern or color – my former mother in law did – and when I said something like ” gee – this pattern is really not my style – cuz it was not my style at all – it was HER style” I was then told how ungrateful I was — this was a prevelant theme in my first marriage
don’t get me started
to define fine linen
and please allow me the indulgance
I grew up in “pill” city
to define: to form into small, pill-like balls, as the fuzz on a wool sweater
my mother bought horrific cheap inexpensive linenit totally “pilled”
if ever there were ever the beginnings of a princess and the pea and me
or the idiocycrisies of a small girl who’s tolerance for everything pilled was nill
this was me
the sheets pilled, the pillow case pilled, the pajamas pilled, the blanket sortof shredded ( it was that horrific poly something) the quilt was scratchy
it was more than I could stand
my exposure to OTHER possibilities in linen was at grandmother hanrahans house – gertrude’s – oh my gosh we are talking stunning exquisite deliciously smooth and soft linen
need I say more??
I digress
ALL I knew is that I was missing something
When the ladies and I got to the part about sharing from our journals what we discovered I was mortified and very embarrassed
I sounded like a whiny, baby, complaining go back to bed monster
to the benefit of this group, their grace and their wisdom
they laughed at me
I was the hoot and holler of the day — my horror was their chuckle of the moment
They said to me —your a linen snob!!! Indulge yourself and go get yourself some of the good stuff!!!
GO and get what it is that you want. Get over it !!
AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
and so the journey began.
Allow me to futher declare: As a linen snob queen of america. I buy only ALL cotton, 800 count, polished if I can find it sheets. I learned a wonderful trick from a little B & B in milwaukee – which I am so sad to see is no longer around - where you put a flannel sheet in between two sheets and it creates this extraordinary layer – and as the flannel sheet ages it gets this ” lovey ” feeling that is indescribable. I have winter plush blankets and a mattelasse quilt — and luxurious down pillows. For decor and a decorating statement – I have pillows!! Lots of them!! AND the colors and style is exactly as I would like.
WHY am I even tell you all of this??
As a secret linen hound I have always wished (OK fantasized ) to have a closet full of linen – one set for each season. OH my gosh. It would be very very martha stewart like ( and I am saying this OUTLOUD for everyone to know? I can’t believe it ) Can you imagine having a harvest bed linen theme? Rust, sage and burnt sienna with a hint of brown to envelope one’s self in??
I think what set me off on this whole thought is that one of the recent catalog that came in the mail said this —are you ready???
Ulimate 1250 Count Sheet Set ( HOLD that linen thought – have I had blinders on – consumer blinders ? Is there something even more luxurious out there than 800 count?)
read on….woven to the exacting european standards that have produced the most exquisite sheets in the world
are you linen
sensibilites drooling yet ?these linen are densely woven ultra twisted ultra fine premium cotton yarns that boast a sumptuois weight and velvety hand
OH My gosh. Where have I been ???? Even worse I find and I feel utterly foolish …there is even 1600 count linen out there!!What’s a linen hound like me to do??
the color of this eygyptian cotton is exquisite flickr image creditK a r e n H a n r a h a n

TGIF: Zucchini Parmesan Loaf
Happiness is the way Friday’s feels, left overs (especially when one is sick), a daughter who likes to bake and is home on a friday night and a brand new recipe to try from Martha.
Thank you my sweet, Kate
zucchini – parmesan loaf
preheat oven to 375
brush bread pan with oil and dust w/ flour – tap out the sparewhisk 1/3 c olive oil, 1/3 cup milk, 2 large eggs in a small bowl
in a large bowl whisk - 2 cups flour ( spooned and leveled – yes martha ) I Cup Parmesan, 2 teas baking powder 1 1/2 teas course salt and 1/4 teas ground pepper
combine until moistened – batter will be like iscuit dough
transfer to prepared pan
Bake until toothpick inserted comes out clean. 60-70 minutes – foil tent it if it starts to brown too quickly
Cool in pan for 15
invert on rack to completely cool
*says it’s good with fresh riccota as a spread
Blogger’s Note: it’s possible that i was just way too snarly to really taste this properly – it was remarkably plain – good and very pretty with those flecks of zucchini and all, but plain tasting – the riccota was not very zippy on it – butter on it was yummy
personal variations – maybe some dried herbs, garlic and perhaps marscopone on it instead of ricotta ??
gosh knows I adore martha and all, but her recipes are really hit or miss sometimes
awesome texture and zucchini green-ness flickr image credit

Who Takes Care of Mother Earth
Wellness consultants and mother earth’s are not supposed to get sick, they are supposed to be the epitome of well being.
If you heard me talk on the telephone today you’d say wow you sound like a mac truck
I’m sooooooooooooo sick
My kate brought “it” home sunday night
With her sweet voice and her eyes that so didn’t look right she said “mama, i don’t feel good”
She got to sleep all day monday and gosh by tuesday in her wonderful determined way she was back at school
By 10 tuesday night my glands were sounding off the alarms – man oh man I’m getting what she had
A friend said you guys have had alot of stress lately
She’s right
I took oodles of echinacea and vita c
Wednesday it was clear it was a full throttle and I was not doing so good
If I had the freedom to sleep all day like Kate perhaps I too could knock this out of me
However I still take care of and care for
I am still trying to work
somehow I keep going
tea, water, lemon, vitamins, more tea – more water
In the when I was married days —the coolness of my spouse’s hand on my forehead or a run for local homemade lemon rice soup was remembered fondly today, someone else doing the dishes, those were nice things
When I got the chills in the middle of the night last night I thought who’s going to get an extra blanket for me
i was trying really hard to remember where the blanket even is
I put on a hooded sweatshirt instead
I really wish someone would tuck me in
I wish someone else would make dinner and do the dishes
I wish my chest didn’t hurt
I wonder if it gets worse – then what ?
how do I make the worrying part stop?
I can’t sleep
last night it was the chills thing
today it was the dog and the phone
the dog still has to be walked
no fun when snot is running down your face
my patience for squirrels, birds and bunny rabbits are nill – why can’t they all go away for today ?
and even though I cleared tomorrow
more time to rest – if i even can
I am still wondering
who takes care of me ?

Artist – Elizabeth Perry
my rendering 24th of September
Elizabeth Perry’s 1000th day of daily drawing dayThere are bloggers that I subscribe to, that speak to me in a variety of ways. When they post I get a gift in my email box that shares their thought for that moment or that day – it’s pretty great.
Several that I subscribe to are artists. One of which celebrated her 1000th consecutive day of daily drawing. The artist in me went – wow!!
She invited all of us to celebrate with her and take a moment and do a drawing. I was so excited – I thought about it all day!! The above momentary marker squiggle rendering was the moment I gave in celebration.
Her name is Elizabeth Perry - Her blog is called wool gathering – I am particulary fond of ” feet crossed ” from September 22nd
I believe that there is an artist inside all of us, when the artist in you is dormant — like parts of me are —it helps to surround oneself with inspiration and beauty like elizabeth’s work –
Elizabeth you are a role model to behold
It is my intent to actually do more with a creativity section on this blog. Highlight other artists – scan our collage work etc – I just need a week to myself on an island with a young cabana boy bringing me fruit drinks!!

Mini Bloody Mary's and Green Bean Bundles
Below is a sneek peek post from a little project – well I should say a BIG project, that I am working on in conjuction with Derrick Sorles. We hope to launch a NEW blog Oct 5th – quite a few details to still manage. It’s been a very exciting project! It’s definitely another layer of expression of the foodie in me! The best part is I am getting paid for it. I also get to work with Chef Kelly who is someone I simply adore.
Mother Earth here. In speaking with Chef Kelly Fisher of Classic Cuisines Catering today, I was reminded of these two wonderful recipes that make quite an impression at a social gathering.
Mini Bloody Mary’s
Freeze a bottle of great vodka – no it won’t actually freeze – duh, but it will get ridiculously cold. That’s what you want.
Peel – yes peel, lots of cherry or grape tomatoes. Toss in boiling hot water first – the skins will peel off really easily. Take a toothpick and pierce a peeled tomato. Dip in freezing cold vodka and dip again in Kosher Salt. Eat immediately. It’s a burst of tomato, vodka and salt in your mouth – a Mini Bloody Mary!! These are so much fun!

Cook Green Beans for 10 minutes, cool in an ice water bath to stop further cooking. Take about 3 green beans and wrap with thinly sliced prosciutto and provolone cheese – lay on a plate until the plate is full, sprinkle with your favorite balsamic vinaigrette and fresh ground black pepper.
wow – major close up pic of a steamed green bean – flickr image creditBoth of these recipes are from The Frugal Gourmet
