The Sun Causes Damage to Your Skin

The sun these days causes damage to your skin – that’s a no-brainer.

The only thing that ages or damages the skin more than the sun is exposure to the sun PLUS exposure to environmental pollutants.

Do we all get exposed to environmental pollutants ?  You betcha!! These turn into free radicals on our skin.

When free radicals attack your skin, a complex chain reaction occurs.  Products containing small amounts of a few anti-oxidants only partially address this equation and are simply not enough to stop the damage that contributes to what we know as accelerated aging.

Look for a sunscreen that combines patented broad- spectrum UVA and UVB protection and that has true antioxidant protection.

The sunscreen I prefer and use…

Has a proprietary combination of  anti-oxidant ingredients  that offers a breakthrough approach with a synergistic, comprehensive, highly derma-available complex that is designed to actually break each link in the chain of free radical damage. ( wow that’s a mouthful and a lot of protection)

It filter’s out the sun’s harsh rays to help prevent skin damage.

It provides a very high protection against sunburn for blondes, redheads and fair-skinned persons.

It’s non-irritating, especially designed for sensitive skin.

Perhaps you’d enjoy this sunscreen as part of your skin care program.

Don’t forget that your luscious lips need sun protection

Bloggers note:  when I was young, oh ever so long ago, I soaked up the sun big time.  As a teenager I felt invincable ( remember that ? ) Oh, I don’t need sun protection.  I did get wise when I was pregnant for the first time actually, so I thought, and started to use a sunscreen when I was beaching it.  I based my decision on the smell – wasn’t fond of the coconut smelling stuff and the price. ( my mom used baby oil with iodine – she use to totally fry her skin – yikes!)  I used a product that had been sitting for a year ( leftover from the summer before)  and got a terrible reaction.  I was told I had formaldhyde poisoning – the preservatives used to pickle the sunscreen had pickled me !! I still have the bleaching and scarring on my arms. To this day I am now ultra careful in the sun, but since that occurance I have had sun poisoning symtoms several times too. All of this is because of the type of chemical I had applied to my skin that I thought was protecting me. This topic is really important to me. There are so many chemicals in typical skin care products – it’s frightening.

If and when you do get ” bit ” by the rays I use this as my “after” relief product, these days we need all the tools we can get. (note the clinicals for this product) great on bug bites, rashes and wind burns too.

Finally, the every day care and protection of your face needs, in my opinion, needs something wonderful.  I use this 5 in one product.  It falls into the anti-aging category with loads of nutrients that are actually available to the skin. I love this quote , “I don’t know what’s in this stuff,  but it’s feeding my face!”

the photographer has little poems underneath her work – this one said:

“…and I wish you Sunrays and Sundays
Perfect starry nights
Sweet dreams and moonbeams
And a love that’s warm and bright
Sunrays and Sundays
Friendship strong and true
Oceans of blue and a room with a view
To live the life you choose…”

Thank you!!!

Chilean Chicken with Lime: A Family Favorite

I have had one heck of a day,  I can’t even begin to tell you. It was a real dooosie.  It was the kindof day where you wore all your hats, and somehow kept spinning your wheels. I did not get much done.

Today was also the one day my son had off this week.  I promised myself I would make a nice dinner. Yet, when it came to making it at the magic 4: 30 ish dinner making hour — I really, really didn’t feel like making a thing.  Once I settled in, it was sooo relaxing.  Sometimes I have to remind myself about that. I love to cook!!

Some dinners are worth calling a family favorite, this one my son will rush home for! Both my kids will go back for seconds of this too.  For me that’s worth it all!  It’s also a recipe that smells so good while making it that I feel all cozy inside and it gets the when’s dinner ready mom question — gotta love that!

There are a few fresh ingredients you must have:   limes, cilanto and a seranno pepper or two.  If you can’t find a serrano a jalepeno works too.

I couldn’t remember if I had chicken stock or not – turns out I didn’t. So my rice is being made with water instead. The stock that is usually added to the chicken had to be water too. Hey – in a pinch water is just as good!! Normally this recipe calls for stock

*I always double my rice recipe for another meal.

*A double batch of chicken is also great for leftovers – tacos or tostada’s – mixed with scrambled eggs, made into chicken salad with yellow peppers and celery – yum!!

*I also just make an entire jar of this rub – saves time for future rubs.

*Hot sauce is a must as a condiment

Chilean Chicken with Cilantro and Lime

This is from William Sonoma’s “roasting” cook book – I adore these cookbooks! They teach me about ingredients I might not normally know about and all my dishes turn out exactly like the pretty pictures.  I have 14 of them and they take up some pretty prime real estate in my kitchen on a shelf next to my stove.

It’s basically roasted chicken with a rub ( mixture of spices rubbed on the skin of the chicken) – now because it’s soooo wicked hot today, I did this all stove top — it’s not the same as roasted, but it wasn’t bad and my house didn’t get hotter than it already is

You can use any type of chicken you prefer, the recipe calls for a whole chicken cut up, we personally use thighs

oil a baking dish and place chicken in skin side up

mix together : 2 Tbls sweet paprika – 1 teas each of chile powder and thyme, salt and pepper
rub into chicken skin

top with fresh crushed garlic and rub that into the skin too

slice serrano peppers over chicken ( careful of hot seeds and oil on hands )

put 1/2 to 3/4 C chicken broth on bottom of pan

roast at 350 for an hour

make rice ( I make mine in chicken broth and use a basmati long grain brown and white combined

simmer black beans ( canned is fine

make a vegetable of choice – we like tri – colored raw peppers or steamed green beans ( today we ate a huge bowl of raw green beans from the farmers market)

serve chicken – top rice with black beans and fresh cilantro and squeeze all ( like absolutely everything ) with fresh lime – yum

I know I said this before,  but this dish is very fragrant while it’s cooking – smells sooo good

If i were to go all out ….a small bowl of black bean soup before this is excellant – i know double black beans, but it really does compliment it – i have a superb recipe should you need one

oooooh and a mango tequila ice following

If your serving cocktails either sangria or margarita’s are particularly yummy – i have served this simple meal many times to company

Flickr image credit –cilantro reminds me of the smell of lime green

Do you have any favorite chicken recipes ?? This is something I am always looking for – post it in the comment section so all of us can partake !!

A Classic: Spaghetti Sauce

Schetti!! ( is that how you spell that?) Everyone’s favorite!! It’s Monday and it’s pasta night.

Quickly stated here is my all time standard works for me sauce:

Saute onion preferably a sweet vidalia and 3 cloves of garlic thinly sliced, one can press, chop – I like my garlic where I can see it, in several tablespoons of olive oil. Saute until onion is translucent. Add two cans of Muir Glen Organic Tomatoes – I used the crushed with basil and one 1/2 can purified water and for a canned tomatoe I enjoy this product. Add a palmful each of basil and oregano, I like to pour it into my palm and crush it to release the smell and the oils of the dried herbs – I get mine from Penzeys. One teaspoon of salt and oooodles of fresh ground black pepper. Simmer for hours.

To make this with meat buy your most favorite sweet italian sausage – while I adore whole foods, wild oats has a much better homemade italian sausage and I only buy without MSG. For me that is an important detail. Remove from casings and simmer with the onion and garlic — this smells sooooo good!!

This will make one meal and one to spare that I ladel into a jar for freezing

My mom’s version added a can of tomato paste and this thickens the sauce

My sauce lately has been watery - really tasty still,  but for some reason watery

A wonderful friend of mine was paralleling it to my life – similar to that book that I can’t remember the name of – burnt rice – burnt by my man, he left—that was last may - I could not stop burning the rice – the watery spaghetti sauce started at the end of this school year, tears for the loss of my marriage – watery sauce

does that sound a bit hokey ???

(still can’t remember the name of that book)

Meatballs of course are an ultimate addition and worth saving for another post!!

flickr image credit —simply stated – yum

Usage Sheet for Green All Purpose Cleaning

Moment of Greenness:

My company has recently sent us a letter regarding the reformulated signature organic super cleaning concentrate that came to market last August.  Many of us who have been using the old product in certain ways have assumed that we could use the new product that way too. That is not so. My company has sent us some very clear authorized usages and warned us that any misuse of the product and the liablity for any damages caused by that misuse would be that of the user or the Independant Distributor who recommended those usages.

With that said here are a few reminders from that letter:

This product full strength is very strong. Do not apply full strength to the skin, it should not remain on the skin for any length of time, do not bathe in this product,  use as an insect repellant, or with animals under any circumstances, do not use as an additive to another product, or for any purpose other than that consistant with labelling.

Explained further the company said;  This product contains surfactants that work by solubilizing and loosening dirt on surfaces. If the product gets on the skin or eyes then the cleaning compounds will attempt to cleanse those surfaces too. Most often resulting in skin and eye irritation. If ingested, some gastointestinal effects may occur. These effects may be more pronounced in animals as their respitory systems are very different from human ones.

More details can be found by reading this detailed Product Brief

I have been sharing a usage sheet for a very long time that additionally recommends this product for windshield washer additive, aquariums and other unauthorized usages – bathing elephants included ( !)

I need to alert all of you that that sheet is now invalid.

I apologize that I didn’t realize this detail and that I may have misguided some of you. I hope this provides clarity

Rock, Paper, Scissors: Conflict Resolution

I am behind the times when it comes to reading local popular magazines, a favorite when I can get my hands on it is the Chicago Magazine. The last page or ” The  Closer ” column in the April issue ( see, behind the times here ) was about what columnist Jeff Ruby called ” the dance of hands “.  The dance of hands is actually the childhood game Rock, Paper, Scissors! I love how he eluded to it as the most ” elegant and profound of all conflict resolution processes” This column totally reminded me of a former summer vacation event that would make a perfect wiglet or slice of life story.

It was the summer of 1999 and we were visiting my childhood friend from High School in Ohio, she and I had lost touch for all sortsof reasons and after many many years reconnected at our reunion in ’98. My menopausal mind at the moment can’t recall the name of the amusement park place (it will come to me) we were going to take all the kids to.  It had water, animals and parks, the sort of the thing you pay big bucks for and stay all day. Anyway, it was a really wicked HOT day, our kids were varied in ages and since this was the first time they had met they had not bonded yet.

My husband at the time had stupidly thrown out his back picking up my daughter. (don’t get me started) A visit to the local chiropractor that morning had already delaying the entire day, the kids were insanely impatient.  We decided that several of us would get started and the rest would meet at the park later.  Unfortunately only one of my children could fit in their van. I personally never ever played rock paper scissors as a kid or if i did I must have been terrible at and blocked it from my childhood memories. I can’t really remember unless I think really hard if rock beats scissors or paper or what. I am kind of embarrassed about that.  Yet, my kids are total rock paper scissor champions. They picked it up at school or something and just like Jeff mentioned in his column,  my kids use it all the time to settle disputes and make decisions. My girlfriend totally burst into tears as she watched one of my kids lose the game of rock paper scissors and stay behind while they left for the amusement park. She said it was the most amazing thing she had ever witnessed in cooperative childhood behavior ever!!

I still can’t remember the name of that park in Ohio with the animals, water park and rides. Oh well.  We ended up having a fantastic day despite all.

So for those who appreciate the game or the sport of Rock Paper Scissors (who would have ever thought) check out where the next convention is.

and locally in Chicago at the Ravenswood Pub there are championships - what a total riot!!
